Travel approximately 90 km west toward the Gulf of Mexico, passing through smaller Yucatecan communities and rural landscapes.

Reach the protected wetlands surrounding Celestún. This coastal environment receives freshwater through the underground hydrological system of the Yucatán Peninsula, creating conditions that support mangroves, aquatic life and abundant bird species.

Meet the authorized local boat captain and board the vessel for the central experience of the day. Navigate through estuarine waters surrounded by mangroves while your guide interprets the landscape and searches for birds and other wildlife.

The experience is peaceful and highly visual, offering a gradual immersion into the ecosystem.

❖ The Flamingos of Celestún

For many visitors, the most anticipated moment is seeing the spectacular pink flamingos. Celestún is an important feeding, resting and reproductive environment for the American flamingo.

The birds move naturally across the coastal wetlands according to season, water level, food availability, weather and breeding cycles. Therefore, neither the exact location nor the number of flamingos can ever be guaranteed.

❖ When Is the Best Time to See Flamingos?

Celestún can be visited year-round. However, CONANP identifies November through February as the period when the greatest concentrations of flamingos and migratory birds are generally found.

Outside these months, flamingos may still be present along with numerous resident and migratory species.

❖ Responsible Flamingo Observation

CONANP regulations require visitors to maintain at least 50 meters from flamingo populations. MexicoTopTravel fully supports responsible wildlife observation.

The goal is not to get as close as possible, but to observe the birds without altering their natural behavior. Telephoto lenses and binoculars are recommended for photographers.

❖ Mangrove Channels

Continue navigating through mangrove ecosystems containing red, black and white mangrove species. These forests provide shelter for birds, nursery areas for fish, protect the coastline and filter water.

Moving through narrow channels is one of the most atmospheric parts of the excursion.

Depending on the authorized boat route and water conditions, the excursion may incorporate areas known for freshwater springs emerging within the coastal wetland environment.

Any swimming opportunity depends entirely on current regulations and instructions from the local operator.
