Tabasco is one of the states in the Gulf region of Mexico. Tabasco is a largely rural state and the site of one of Mexico’s largest oil fields. It is bordered on the west by the Tonalá River and the state of Veracruz, on the south by the state of Chiapas, and on the east by the state of Campeche and the Gulf of Mexico.

Most of Tabasco is covered by an alluvial floodplain, and large portions of the state are made up of rivers, lagoons, and marshlands. It is heavily forested and hosts a wide array of animal species, including jaguar, deer, and caiman. The state has a hot and humid tropical climate, with temperatures ranging from 20° to 40°C (68° to 104°F). Some of Mexico’s largest rivers flow through Tabasco, including the Usumacinta, the Grijalva, and the San Pablo. The state covers an area of 24,578 sq km (9,490 sq mi).
