The Natural Reserve of the Biosphere Tehuacán-Cuicatlan,located to the Southeast of Puebla and the Northwest of Oaxaca ahs an extension of 490,187 hectares approximately. It is considered as one of the main centers of biological diversity in Mexico. Human remains over 7,000 years old b.c have been found in its valley. In addition, the area comprehends different ethnic groups such as:Mixtecos and Popolocas,descendants of the Olmecas.
This natural reserve has diverse ecosystems, classified into 19 types of vegetation, including six variants considered as secondary vegetation and it has the third place concerning occupied surface (19, 5%) in the high parts with forests of temperate pines,juniperos and other associate species . It also has a high rate of endemic flowers which only live in this region. The fauna has approximately 102 species of mammals, 356 kinds of birds and about 53 species of reptiles.
