The Natural Reserve of the Biosphere Calakmul (declared in 1989) is located 210 kilometers to the Southeast of the capital of Campeche. It is the largest protected area in Mexico (723,185 hectares). Internationally, this tropical reserve represents an ecological link between the forests of Peten Guatemalteco and the lacadona region of Chiapas, with the Northern region and the Caribbean and the peninsula of Yucatan, including the Reserve of the Biosphere Sian Ka’an and the agro forest of Quintana Roo.There are important archeological sites in this area: Calakmul,Becan,X’puhil and Chicanna .
Calakmul has important ecosystems .Those prevailing are: the tropical humid forest, the high, average and low jungles, some small meadowlands, open areas of acahuales ,forest areas of low handle, aquatic vegetation and humid pre-mountain forest .The flora of the place has 390 genders and about 1.500 species(10% are endemic ).There are also 73 species of orchids .It has also been registered 837 species of dicotyledonous and 43 monocotyledonous. This diversity of environments shelters some species threatened or in danger of extinction: 86 species of mammals, 75 reptiles, 18 amphibious and 358 kinds of birds.
