Ria Celestun is located in a coastal fringe 145 kilometers away from the City of Campeche through the state highway. It is one of the largest areas of mangrove swamps in the Gulf of Mexico and it was declared Natural Reserve of the Biosphere in 2000.The reserve has a 81,482,33 hectares of surface and comprehends the municipalities Celestun and Maxcanun the state of Yucatan and Calkini in Campeche. It is excellent for the observation of flora and fauna.
Ria Celestun has diverse well-preserved ecosystems. The great diversity of fauna includes 304 birds among residents and migrating ones, 75 species of mammals, 13 species from 7 families of amphibious and 64 species of reptiles from 18 families, 36 of them are snakes.
