 Manialtepec is a sacred paradise of nature. This beautiful lagoon is located 16 kilometers west of Puerto Escondido in the municipality of San Jose Manialtepec, on highway number 200. The term Manialtepec comes from the nahuatl language “manine”, animal that drags and “tepetl”, “places of lizards”. The Manialtepec Lagoon has turned into an important tourism site where the extension of water and its exhuberant vegetation constitutes a fascinating natural and coastal landscape that invites the observation of flora and birds, swim and navegate.
In Manialtepec, the lagoon, river and sea get together. It has a body of water of 8 kilometers long, surrounded by mangroves and great variety of vegetation. Its tropical condition and its variety of ecosystems favor the presence of wildlife fauna and marina and is found surrounded by mangroves that are home to a number of local water bird species and migratory, singing birds and iguanas. Here you can observe different colonies of birds like black eagle and kingfish, among others. It also has small areas of beaches, where you can fish different species and swim in fresh or ocean waters. You can rent kayak or speed boats to peacefully navegate the lagoon´s extension. The lagoon offers you fun and unforgettable moments.
