Looked at by ancient cultures as a symbol of beauty and mysticism, the butterflies was the souls of warriors that died in battle or sacrificed for the Aztecs. It seems as though their only current purpose is to enjoy their beauty, but more than that, they are excellent polinizers and indicators of a change of the environment. There are approximately 2 000 night butterfly species and 35 000 night species in Mexico, the majority of which, over 65 percent, live in tropical areas.
One of the oldest varieties is the famous Monarca butterfly which is not originally from the country, migrates each year from Northamerica to the mountains of the stateof Michoacan to reproduce. The Xcaret Eco-Archeological Park also invites you to admier the extensive variety of native butterflies from the state of Quintana Roo, flying freely. |
