Puerto Escondido is a natural paradise located on the Pacific south, on the coast of Oaxaca some 800 kilometers from Mexico City and 290 kilometers from the capital of the state, belonging to the municipality of San Pedro Mixtepec. It is the main tourism center in Oaxaca and the oldest in the region, however, still conserves the characteristics of a peaceful fishing town where you can enjoy nature and the sea.
This area is known as Punta Escondida: during the 19th century it was fishing area that counted with a port to ship coffee and precious wood allowing the development of trade and giving the area fame among the international community. The old town is found in a small hill across from the bay, while the tourism area is extended from the main beach to the Marinero beach.
Puerto Escondido has a diversity of magis places, offering a visitor rest, adventure, emotion, water sports, flora and fauna, taking you through a mosaic of sensations that goes from the peaceful thermal waters to the folklore of the town’s culture, passing through its pre hispanic history, its modern hotels, night life and its indescribable landscapes marked by a natural environment with modern life confort.
Among its many attractions, this destination offers you a notable complex of beaches with its exuberant vegetation, ideal to carry out a great variety of water and recreational activities. It is a perfect site to practice surfing at a professional level, thanks to the strong waves of some of its beaches, like Zicaleta Beach, site of international surfing tournaments and Principal Beach, also perfect for surfing, in addition to carrying out fishing sports events during festivities in November.
In its surroundings you can find natural areas like the Chacahua National Lagoon Park, a combination that homes a diversity of flora like mangroves, endemic species nurseries, in addition to diverse exotic singing birds. In Mazunte, you can visit the Mexican Turtle Center, institution dedicated to research and the preservation of a different variety of these animals. Surrounded by mangroves and located close to the city of Puerto Escondido, the Manialtepec Lagoon you will find a small escape to the peaceful mother nature. Other activities include open sea fishing, diving, snorkel, and tandem flights, Bacocho, Puerto Angelito and Carrizalillo are good options with professinal assistance.
