Popocatéptl volcano, “smoky mountain” and the Iztaccihuatl volcano, which means “sleeping woman”, is part of hte Popocatepetl-Iztaccihuatl, located in the eastern part of the State of Mexico, bordering the States of Puebla and Morelos. Its name comes from nahuatl and an ancient legend that symbolizes love of a couple and challenge of the Gods. These two colosals are the perfect terrain to practice mountaineering.
The Popocatepetl measures about 5,452msnm, and is the second highest peak in the country and one of the massive mountains prefered by athletes of all levels among them those that practice rappel. It has a conic form and its top is always covered with snow. It also has an enormous crater with two interior funnels whose bottom has a lagoon with boiling sulfur. It has a number of a rising path, among them the Pico Mayor and Espinazo del Diablo. It is currently prohibited to climb due to its intense volcanic activity. With 5,286msnm, the Iztaccihuatl is the third highest volcano in Mexico with almost 7 kilometers long and formed by five extinct cones. It has several rising circuits with different levels of difficulty and could be climbed during the while year, although the best season is from September to May.
