The natural Reserve of the Biosphere Tehuacan-Cuicatlan, located to the Southeast of Puebla and to the Northeast of the State of Oaxaca, has an approximate extension of 490,187hectares. It is considered one of the main centers of biological diversity in Mexico. This natural reserve is between Sierra Mixteca and three mountains to the East. The valley is one of the regions in the American continent where human remains have been found (7000 b.c) and they correspond the period of the corn in Mexico. This area comprehends different ethnic groups: Mixtecos, Popolocas (descendants of the Olmecas) among other groups.
One of the most distinctive features of the region is the high biological diversity. It possesses a series of diverse ecosystems, classified into 19 types of vegetation (including six variants which are considered as secondary) and in the high parts occupies the third place regarding surface (19, 5%) with temperate forest and other associate species .In addition, this reserve has high figures of endemic flowers which only live in this region .The fauna of the region has approximately 102 species of mammals, 356 kinds of birds and about 53 species of reptiles.
