  Natural Reserve of the Biosphere Sierra de Manantlan, Guadalajara  
     
  The natural reserve of the Biosphere Sierra de Manantlan (in the Western center) is only 50 kilometers away from the Pacific Ocean. It has 139.577 hectares of surface and it is located at the extreme South of Northern Sierra Madre. It is also part of the Southeast mountainous area of Jalisco. This natural reserve is located 202 kilometers to the Northeast of Guadalajara (Highway 80).Manantlan means spring .This mountainous area supplied the ancient population who had settled in its surroundings with water. Nowadays this area still favors intensive agriculture, cattle rising and regional industry .It was declared Natural Reserve of the Biosphere by UNESCO in 1987.
Several kinds of vegetables have been registered (over 2000), 20 of them are endemic. The fauna includes 330 kinds of birds, about 200 different species of mammals and 50 species of reptiles, fish and amphibious .
